Keeping Up Appearances

There’s an old television series that my mother especially loves to watch. It’s called “Keeping Up Appearances”. The main character Hyacinth is obsessed with maintaining a good image as an upstanding, important member of the community. It’s a great comedy to watch and is definitely a favorite in our household.

I suppose everyone has a little bit of Hyacinth in us. Sometimes we can become so engrossed in religious practice and appearing to be a “good” Christian we sometimes miss the point. We keep up an image of Christianity rather than practicing it. We neglect cultivating a deep and true relationship with God.

I know I needed a solid lesson in humility to remember that God does not look at outward appearances. What matters to Him is the state of our heart – do we truly accept and love other people? Do we truly love and revere God?

I hope dear Reader we remember that what matters most is not what we appear to others. At the end of the day what matters most is whether we served God and served others genuinely and to the best of our ability.

In Psalm 51:10, King David writes “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” May we echo this in our lives and seek God’s guidance to maintain a true Christian attitude.

May we truly be, and not just appear to be, genuine ambassadors for Christ.
