Fearing the dark

When I was little (ok even when I was no longer so little), I was very afraid of the dark. I imagined monsters, ghosts and a whole range of scary things were lurking there just waiting to jump out and hurt me. I remember one time when I was about 11 or so, I watched a scary movie. That was a bad decision. I was so afraid that my mother ended up sleeping next to me that night. Her presence comforted me and gave me a sense of security.

Fast forward to today, and sometimes I still have fears and anxieties that weigh me down. However, just like my mother stayed with me when I was a child, I’ve learned that GOD never leaves our side. No matter what the dark brings, GOD’s presence and support reassures me. 1 John 4:18 tells us that His “perfect love drives out fear”. The fact is, nothing can ever happen to us unless it has first been approved by GOD. Sometimes we go through periods of darkness, however light will inevitably break through at the end. Whatever pain or darkness GOD allows has a greater purpose which is ultimately for our good.

As we reflect during this Easter week, I hope we always remember that we need not fear the dark and that light will always prevail. After Jesus was crucified, there was deep darkness in the world. However, at the third day, Light broke through when Jesus rose again. He has overcome darkness for us. Once and for all.

God bless you, ~M
